Upset on the Road
Central Oklahoma's road loss to San Diego is a result the voters can't ignore
The Central Oklahoma Bronchos were within striking distance but couldn't close the gap on Saturday as they fell 38-33 to the San Diego Toreros. Despite picking up 96 more yards than the Toreros, the Bronchos couldn't convert that extra yardage to scores.
Central Oklahoma's loss came despite strong showings from Baylor Hayes and David Wells Jr.. Hayes threw for 359 yards and 4 TDs (1 INT) while completing 71.4% of his passes, while Wells Jr. picked up 91 receiving yards and 3 scores. Wells Jr. had some trouble finding his footing against Rhode Island last Saturday, so this was a nice turnaround.
Torrance Burgess Jr. was a one-man wrecking crew for San Diego as he rushed for 232 yards and 3 touchdowns while picking up 10.5 yards per carry. Burgess Jr. has been consistently good when it comes to rushing yards: he's rushed for 120+ every time he's taken the field this season.
Central Oklahoma now has a losing record at 1-2. That ends a brutal two-game stretch that also included the Rams, and unfortunately concluded with no wins. As for San Diego, they now have a winning record of 2-1.
Coming up, Central Oklahoma is set to square off against NW Missouri State in a HFC battle at 12:00 p.m. on Saturday. This will be the Bronchos' first chance to prove their worth in the conference. As for San Diego, San Diego and Wyoming will also face off in a PGC clash at 12:00 p.m. on Saturday. The Toreros are the clear underdog, so they're hoping it's the size of the fight that determines this one. "Every so-called mismatch is one turnover and one big play from being a dogfight. That's our plan," Coach Goh said this week.
